World penitentiary data is in general widespread in different databases of different international official and research organizations. In order to allow an integrated and comparable view of different indicators over time, IPS team created the “worldwide statistics map”.
This map presents only 5 out of 12 indicators namely: the “total number of prisoners”; “prisoners per 100.000 habitants”; “prison system occupancy rate”; “prisoners held untrialed per 100.000 habitants“; “juvenile prisoners per 100.000 habitants“.
In the map you can compare different country data comprising the period from 2003 to 2013.
To have access to the set of 12 indicators, please do not hesitate to contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org

Disclaimer note: Data presented in the following maps is the result of research of several data sources.
The lack of available data for some countries in the period of analysis is a big obstacle to present graphical data. To surpass it, it was assumed to use the last available value, for the indicator and country in cause, as the value for the years that had no data. As data is retrieved from various sources it may show some disparities as it can refer to estimates rather than actual values, which constraints possible comparisons between countries.
Main data sources considered: Internacional Center for Prison Studies (ICPS); SPACE I- Council of Europe Annual Penal Statistics; United Nation Statistics on Criminal Justice, UNODC (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime).
