The European Commission has approved 24 month’s funding for the project AWARE EAW- European Arrest Warrant.
The project is led by the Bremen Senate of Justice and Constitution, Germany, and it aims to increase the cross-border cooperation between the EU Member States using two Framework Decisions (FDs) in particular: 2002/584/JHA on the European arrest warrant and the surrender procedures between Member States and 2008/909/JHA on the application of the principle of mutual recognition to judgments in criminal matters imposing custodial sentences or measures involving deprivation of liberty for the purpose of their enforcement in the European Union.
The AWARE European Arrest Warrant project will allow knowledge-transfer between those European legal practitioners responsible for extradition, and to jointly explore best practices and sustainable development of cross-border cooperation in the application of the European Arrest Warrant, whilst respecting the protection of fundamental rights.
Moreover, the project intends to develop an analysis of the partners’ prison and legal protection systems, with the resulting findings providing a baseline for the development of standards which lead to a standardised procedure for the provision of information by the issuing member state, according to each individual case contextualised in referral to international standards.
Besides the promoter of the project, the consortium of partners is composed of three other organisations, namely IPS_Innovative Prison Systems (Qualify Just – IT Solutions and Consulting Lda), from Portugal, the Superior Council of Magistracy, from Romania, and the NGO Antigone Onlus, from Italy.
The project’s funding amounts to €218 834 and is provided by the European Commission’s DG Justice Programme
